Two days in a row of dental work scheduled was not my favorite... I mean, I really really like my dentist Dr. Lv (pronounced lyoo) and he is so meticulous and gentle and detail oriented and aware of pain cues that most people miss probably because of his background training -- and he's also super funny and kind and both he and Kendra the dental tech spent Thurs exchanging cute pet stories with me including my dentist's dog's first time discovering cat box treats when visiting his mother-in-law. Normally at cleanings we talk about musicals or food/tea, but for the dental work itself they recognized that cute animals stories for the animal lover was the way to go after I commented on the massage element in the chair feeling like a big cat kneading my back. But, with redhead gene, dental work is never fun for me no matter how good the people are (both at their job and as humans) though I do actually like the cleanings because I like my dentist/hygienists/techs and I always love how smooth/clean my teeth feel afterward. But at least now the fillings are done that Dr. Lv wanted to do last year only I got laryngitis after too many Frank Turner concerts in a row so was constantly coughing every few minutes even without dental work happening so cancelled but then never rescheduled.
My redhead gene mutation of mcr1 is the type that affects nerve cells so I tend not to feel blunt trauma as much (even when I've fractured or chipped bones) but all pain I feel feels like burning in the nerve cells pain. (Even cold burns. I was in my 30s when I learned this was untrue for most people.) I'm not going to go too deep into the science of the mutation and why/how it affects perception/propagation of pain. but it means that all my life, lidocaine has never worked as indicated for me. (This includes pain relief sprays/patches with lidocaine in them -- do not EVER buy me the aloe gel with lidocaine for a sunburn -- I'd rather endure my lobster burn and my flesh feeling like raw meat radiating intense amounts of heat from it than use any form of aloe with lidocaine in it.) It doesn't block pain for me, what it does is burn along the length of every nerve cell as it travels it so I can literally trace on my skin the branching of the nerves it's traversing with hell fire and when the hellfire stops, my nerves are back to their normal functionality with no pain relief whatsoever and no numbing. So lidocaine magic spray for athletic injuries is completely ineffective for me in every possible way and lidocaine for dental work (the most common injections for dental work) is completely useless with me. Novocaine, which hasn't been used for over a decade, felt like lidocaine burning down the nerves but I would get about 10-15mins of "as numb as I get" from it.
So what my previous dentist (now retired) and I found worked for me was articaine when it came on the market -- the injection itself burns and it leaves a metallic taste in my mouth, but then I get as numb as I will get and I have about 45mins of relative numbed/pain relief for the dentist to work. Current dental practices use septocaine (articaine with epinephrine) as the redhead gene alternative to lidocaine -- BUT it has a LOT of contraindications if you're on a lot of common medications so it's not the default choice unless lidocaine isn't a good choice for you.
So yesterday, even though he used a full ampule, twice what he thought he would need and had injected every nerve in the area, it had mostly worn off before halfway through the work, and the second set of drilling in particular was basically like having it done with no pain meds and my new dentist (who had never done fillings on me before) could tell by my eye flinching and when it happened that I was clearly not numbed at all and it was confirmed for him and the hygienist assisting by the way I was talking afterward and me answering directly 'Yeah, it's been all pins and needles since about when you started in on the second drilling and will be completely gone by the time I leave. But that's not your fault, this is how it is for me."
So then today, he was asking about the septocaine efficacy after the initial injections and observing how not numb I was from it and after I was trying to be stoic hesitant over if more would help, he decided "No. You should be more numbed than that before I start working and if I do a second set of injection now, it should get you more time without pain for me to drill." (Spoiler alert: the second drilling today hurt about as much as the first yesterday) and when he watched the eye flinching with the second injection he just shook his head slightly said, "You shouldn't have felt that injection at all with the previous double dose if it worked the way it does for most people do." But he was very satisfied with how much the extra dose worked for me compared to the day before.
So the second dosage of septocaine, quadrupling the amount you would normally use for someone my size/weight, was enough to numb me "properly" to reduce the burning nerve pain of the work being done during the drilling. The rest of it is pretty much just blunt trauma pain with dental work so there's discomfort but not really pain, it's really only during the active drilling and then while the inner tooth is exposed to the air before layering the filling that I feel such intense nerve pain -- it's why before articaine/septicaine were options, I preferred the minimal injections of Novocaine and anything but lidocaine gel for numbing the tissue for the injection (benzocaine burns/tingles a little doesn't do much numbing, but it takes the edge off the injection if left there then the injections right away.) There are some others I haven't tried, but the goal is most effective at lowest doses with minimal side effects not to use the highest rated for pain blocking.
The only problem is that AFTERWARD, the entire area around that second injection site deep in my cheek got really swollen took a while for the swelling to go down (the numbing/pins and needles tingling was still gone within an hour of receiving the second injection) which is one of the signs of allergic reaction that indicate you should stop using septocaine... AND, later that evening, I definitely had another side effect that indicates you shouldn't use it which is mild methemoglobinemia with several of my fingertips (especially my nails) turning blue-ish colored but I didn't have any of the headaches or extreme fatigue or turn blue enough that I would need to go in for it. (I've also had that type of hypoxia occur after drinking WAY too much and in college had to go in for it while in Chicago after attending a club show of a friend's band where they had regular tickets or for like $10 more "all you could drink Jack or Captain for the 3 hours of the show" and it was while I was reacting badly to high fructose corn syrup (while the US supply was tainted with mercury it turned out) so I was drinking Jack and diet cokes and matching drink for drink with a friend who weighed at least half again as much as me if not twice as much as me at the time because it was while I was dancing a LOT and doing fencing... Let's just say Jack and diet is what sent me in for medical intervention because I couldn't stop shaking with chills even after vomiting and I was turning blue colored and only speaking in French (this happens when I drink sometimes, I forget English only remember how to speak French) -- and yet while they were already piling up all the heated towels they could get on me to stop the shaking and goosebumps chills, I still insisted on reading the entire forms and wouldn't sign the medical forms until my friend who still remembered high school French looked at it and I pointed out the clause about needing a translator and she and everyone else laughed said I couldn't be that drunk if I was reading the legal forms and questioning sub clauses in it. Only the PAC and RNs were concerned because they'd never seen anyone with such bad physical symptoms while still cognizant and lucid and intelligent making jokes and able to read fine print and remember everything going on. I don't think they understood how my body processes alcohol. Heated towels, fluids, metabolites, and extra oxygen did the trick but they were considering a blood transfusion for the blue color and hypoxia if that didn't work. And that is why I don't drink Jack Daniels anymore, don't even like the smell of it. That story is also the source of my wry half grin when singing along to Shaboozey during the chorus, especially at the line "They know me and Jack Daniel's got a history." I also don't ever drink diet coke/pepsi since I discovered while I was bartending that diet sodas, or anything with aspartame, increased my migraine frequency significantly to the point I was having multiple every week. And, I have had hypoxia blood alcohol poisoning issues from excess of alcohol one other time, most recently in Kentucky for ROMP but we had friends to stay with on property and there was a significantly more gin and bourbon involved across the entire afternoon/night and it was nowhere near as severe with the uncontrollable teeth chattering shivering and I only had a blue undertone not like the time in Chi so wasn't nearly as bad as with having aspartame in the mix....
Anyway. Not happy that an effective dosage of septocaine to numb me enough not to feel the burning pain of the drilling may be too much that I have a mild allergic reaction with the amount of swelling I had AND that I experienced mild methemoglobinemia after it... That's not something you mess around with and I've been told to watch for signs of it because my veins close to the surface are so blue. But also, and more likely, the methemoglobinemia could be a side effect of the benzocaine two days in a row.... Benzocaine is known for causing acquired methemoglobinemia in some people. I don't use over the counter pain meds generally due to my reactions to lidocaine, so I only encounter benzocaine in dental work settings. I'm gonna tell myself it's because I had one dose on the left side yesterday and two more doses on the right side today and that's why so I will make sure to schedule more time between if I ever need fillings on both sides of my mouth again.... And hopefully it will be a very long while before I will need any sort of fillings or dental work beyond cleanings again... But also I should probably let them know just in case.
Also, I think one of the right side fillings is ever so slightly too high, but I'm going to wait see if it settles a bit once the last of the swelling and pain at the injection site in my cheek heals up -- calling before Monday won't do any good anyway for my dental office, y'know?
Everything is as it should be for the car and the check should come through next week but could be as much as 10 business days. Work will need to have the decals removed from the Prius and I will have to pay for it and transfer my plates and the title transfer at the DMV (I could do it online, but that requires mailing a check but I don't like entrusting important things to the mail unless I have to at this point with how much things go missing.) For now, I'm just test driving the car making sure I don't have any battery issues or anything (Usually happens when a hybrid sits too long) and using it for driving just me and the dog (no passengers unless fellow employees while on the work insurance.) That said, I'm okay with waiting a bit until both Mercury and Venus go direct again before signing checks/titles on the Prius handoff -- concluding my time with the Scion was revisiting/revising but making the Prius mine is something new and you should fix what you got wrong in the past during retrogrades but if you can wait you shouldn't start anything new or sign contracts if it can be avoided. It just means that anything larger group, I can't be driving my car for now.
Tomorrow day is the protest downtown at the Capitol from noon til 3 and then Crissy should be done with state DI competition (in Sun prairie this year) around 3:30ish to then pick me up so we can take her car out to Viroqua to see Skerryvore (with Cassie & Maggie opening) then the drive back home. And then Sunday morning up early to plan to pickup Mikaela around 8:30-8:45 to take Crissy's car again to Milwaukee Art Museum for Art in Bloom (technically our entry time is 10am, we can get there earlier but can't enter anything but the atrium/gift shop/restaurant areas until 10.) Then back in town and picking up the dog to get some hours in. Monday night is the Skerryvore VIP Whiskey Tasting show at Bur Oak. And while we don't have tickets to their Tues show (forgot to pickup tickets until after they were sold out) I am considering going to Minocqua Brewing Co East Side tasting room location on Tuesday evening for the dissertation reading/q&a about gynecological medicines in ancient Greece/Italy and medicinal plants that are useful for such things. And then after that (or instead of it) dinner with my mom at the house and wine and finishing up more of Worlds Figure Skating Championships (long programs mostly.) But then nothing in my calendar until the 12 (Della Mae concert at Stoughton Opera House -- forgot about it when listing my free time in my calendar in April because we don't have tickets yet. Like them, but didn't need to prioritize them at the start of the season so likely only balcony seating remaining. I still need to pick those up along with some other tickets to even out concert/theatre ticket purchases between Crissy and me.)
O! AND I learned via email this week that on April 14/15 they will be pulling out the old carpet laying new carpet in hallways/landing/stairs and first floor hallway (they did ours on the second floor a couple years ago which is a whole nother story) which means limited access in and out during the daytime while they're working AND the off gassing is going to give me wicked light headedness/migraines for the next while. Not my favorite, but not much I can do about it other than sell my condo and move -- and I can't make all that happen before the 14th, lol.
Also though, there's still swelling/scarring around the injection site in my right cheek and a mild metallic taste if I feel the inside of it with my tongue, and that bottom right molar does feel slightly too high sometimes when I bite down. Not my favorite. Not my favorite. But also, at least all the fillings are done, no longer hanging over me needing to be done and hopefully it will be a long while before I need any dental work again. Because redhead gene, blech!
Also. The world economy might be crumbling and everything on fire -- but have you been enjoying these high quality penguin memes as much as me since the internet learned about the tariffs placed on Heard & MacDonald Islands (near Antarctica populated only by penguins, not even any research stations there) along with all the other global tariffs? Because these penguin memes are effing hilarious, best thing from the internet since the Luigi memes, and it's important to remember you need to remember to laugh to keep your sanity -- especially when things are the most difficult and bleak looking.
Anyway. That's all for now. I had like 50 hours in by 9pm tonight (didn't add up hours until then, oops! Don't ask me how I worked 50 hours this week AND worked a 20h 15m poll shift... Sometimes the Capricorn moon plays hard, but also my last couple posts were about being exhausted needing sleep sooooo, guess I shouldnt be too surprised, lol.) So plan is to just drink tea and read and listen to the rains tonight until I head to bed. Maybe I'll even finish this book! And then read some more in one of my nonfictions until I get sleepy enough to head to bed, the Dryden translation of Plutarch's Lives has been really good for me since I started it back in August and have been slowly working my way through Volume 1 (and after it I will read Volume 2, at about the same pace, lol.) O!!! And at some point this weekend (but not tonight) I need to catch up on Seo Linn's Thank Folk It's Thursday return to live streaming after a bit of a break while touring (they do them simulcast live on ig, fb, and youtube -- but youtube is where they leave them up in case you missed it) because with the time zone difference between here and Ireland, their 8pm started it about ten minutes before I had to go to the dentist yesterday.
P.S. I know the tariffs are going to increase the cost of everything so this is going to sound very entitled first world problem-y-- but also my favorite wines are French/Greek and my favorite whiskeys are Irish/Scottish and my favorite olives/olive oil are Greek and my favorite teas grown in India/Sri Lanka/Japan/China and all my favorite coffees from South/Central America and so honestly I'm really sad about all this... And don't get me started on putting tariffs on chocolate producing nations right before Easter, though at least it wasn't right before Halloween... I don't have all that many little luxury vices/pleasures, but now they're all going to be tariffed and their prices go up and I'm not keen on that. Not keen on that at all.....
